Metrics and Analytics: lj2
After reading the material, I agree with a great deal of it. People are not always aware of how the different sites will track and record what they are searching for and using it to either put the person into a category or use that same information to be able to sell them something. From the time that I was in the military I was a Cryptologist, and we would use people information to be able to put them into special categories, just as the reading stated that what you search for and share on social media could end you up on a watch list or some form of investigation. It is odd what the government can use to be able to track someone or even find the person of interest in something. I remember a case I saw on TV where they used someone’s social media to track down a relative that was involved in a murder and were able to gain all their history to use it against them.
I personally do not like how when
you look up something on any other device then the next time you log on
somewhere you will receive random postings or messages about whatever it was
that you had previously looked up. Just recently I was talking to a friend
about going on a cruise and now my Facebook feed is filled with advertisements
about cruises, and we were only discussing it. I believe that every is a wealth
of knowledge and that we can learn things from one another, but some of the
analytics that are used by some of these sites to me is a complete invasion of privacy
and one reason why I have dulled down my list of the ones that use or will
frequent. I mean even TikTok will take reference of videos that you like and
watch to put together the next stream of videos that you watch or encounter.
Hey Bryan,
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about how this aggressive tracking completely violates our privacy! Anytime I see something on the Internet after I mention it to myself, a friend, or a family member it gives me an incredibly eerie feeling. It makes you wonder how much of your life is available for the government and social media companies to view at their leisure. Nowadays I sleep in a different room as my cell phone and always keep my computer's webcam taped shut, and also try my hardest to unplug myself from social media.
