Laws and Regulation; lj6

I found the readings from the chapter very interesting. One that caught my attention was on page 237 that discussed Social Media Terrorism. I remember when the Boston Marathon bombings occurred it was brought to light that they were able to learn to build the pressure cooker bombs by watching videos on YouTube. Even with current events going on not many people know that the number one social media outlet in Russia is YouTube. YouTube is also the oldest social media outlet that people have used and posted on. The reading from page 239 also caught my attention because it involves using social media to harass and stalk people. There are times when people have restraining orders against another person, and they use social media to harass that person or stalk their whereabouts. Up until just recently many state laws had no way of prosecuting these people. I have had actual experience with this. I was going through a bad divorce in which I had to get a protection injunction against the person I was involved with, and they used social media to track where I was and harass me. I was able to go through the courts and go after the person, but you must have actual screenshots of their postings to do this. They would post something and give it just enough time for other people to see it to get word to me and then they would delete it.

It is known that in Russia the media is mainly controlled by the government and news as well as the people are censored, which is very much different than it is here in the states. Here in the sates people can be taken to court and file a lawsuit against someone for publicly posting something even though we have the first amendment. I remember during the Trump election the term “fake news” was coined by both sides of the political system and made use the popular fact checking. It was also the first time in history that the President of the United States, along with members of his staff were banned from posting on social media. This is very much different from his predecessor who was marked as the first president in history to use social media in a positive way.

To answer the questions this is one reason why I watch what I post on social media all the time. I have a personal social media account and a professional for this very reason. I know that my response is not completely separated for the questions, but I feel that I have touched on all the points that were requested. I feel that social media should not be used to express political views honestly because in the process friendships can be ruined very quickly because of the strong feelings some people have about this topic.

  1. Hello Bryan,
I agree that the section on Social Media Terrorism was particularly interesting out of the topics to address. It really shows how easy it can be to learn about how to do certain tasks (not to mention the countless crime shows that are out and lay out how criminals did certain things and where they slipped up). It's unfortunate how difficult it is to pursue charges for traditional stalking, let alone social media stalking. That said, I'm very sorry to hear that you've had to face that first hand. I hope you are doing well now and that it's been resolved.
It's rather interesting how propaganda and censorship can work hand in hand but also against each other. I think most, if not all, countries use some level of propaganda. But in censorship areas, there's the very strong national propaganda that is blatantly broadcasted. There's a youtube channel I've watched where interviewers have talked to some escapees from regiments with heavy propaganda and their views on what they thought about it when they were in the country versus how they do now that they've escaped and reality as it is versus what the country presented.
There's nothing wrong with being careful about what you post; it's a very good idea in fact. I mostly just have personal but I keep them very small rather than frequently posting on them or broadcasting them. Politics definitely feels like a minefield and I personally avoid it as much as possible on the internet. I've seen how it's destroyed family and friendships.

  2. Social media terrorism is a new term for me, at first I thought about cyber bullying but the article in the textbook about the Boston marathon bombings exposed more light on that term. The idea of social media being used as a tool to monitor and harass people is not new to me, ever since the 2016 presidential election these activity has sky rocketed on social media platforms and also people in broken relationships use social media to stalk an ex's account so see how and what they are doing. we have all done this activity to an extent.

  3. Hello Bryan,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with social media stalking. I appreciate you sharing your experience though, because I never thought it could actually be resolved using the rule of law. Its quite scary to think that someone you no longer want in your life can force themselves upon you through the Internet. The internet is a scary place, and people can easily spread lies without repercussion. You have to be careful about who you talk to for sure. In my own personal network, I know of a friend who was blackmailed out of hundreds of dollars because a Facebook friend he messaged decided to portray their messages very deceptively to suggest inappropriate behavior.

  4. Hey Bryan,
Sorry to hear about your experience, social media can be a blessing and a curse depending who uses it for what. I didn't even realize how many people use youtube for interacting vs just watching videos. It reminds me of how people use reddit.
